Code Review Committee

In the past, uniform codes were adopted by the City as new versions became available. However, Uniform Model codes developed by the International Council of Building Officials will no longer be updated. As a result, the International Code Council and the National Fire Protection Association have developed codes currently being adopted through out the United States. The International Code Council (ICC) was established in 1994 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing a single set of comprehensive and coordinated national model construction codes. The founders of the ICC are Building Officials and Code Administrators International, Inc. (BOCA), International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), and Southern Building Code Congress International, Inc. (SBBCI). The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a non-profit public safety organization, started work on its own building code in March 2000. The safety codes and standards are developed by NFPA and its partners, the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAMPO), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and the Western Fire Chiefs Association (WFCA).

The Code Review Committee will meet on a regular basis for a period of approximately six-months, hear presentations from code organizations, review code philosophies and processes, develop additional questions, conduct public hearings, and ultimately draft a report to the City Commission with a recommendation. Once this process has been completed the Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical, Fire and Building Boards will conduct a technical review and forward recommended amendments to the City Commission for adoption.

There are substantial advantages in combining the efforts of the existing code organizations to produce a single set of codes. Code enforcement officials, architects, engineers, designers and contractors can now work with a consistent set of requirements throughout the United States. This uniform adoption will lead to consistent code enforcement and higher quality construction in Lawrence. .

Copies of NFPA and I-Code sets are available in the City Clerks Office.
